The Cowboy Trail - Bridging the Gap
The Northwest Nebraska Trails Association is working to help the region realize its potential for trail development and maintenance. Donations from its members and the public have been vital to helping the organization meet many of its goals.
To date, the NNTA's premier fund-raising success was securing the $88,000 of matching funds necessary to receive a $350,000 Recreational Trails Program grant to develop the westernmost section of Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail. The trail is recognized as a vital part of the Great American Rail-Trail, with spans the United States from coast to coast.
The NNTA's work, along with Cowboy Trails West of Sheridan County, will ensure that the trail is developed on the abandoned rail line from Gordon to five miles east of Chadron. The next phase of the project for the NNTA is development of the Cowboy Trail Connection, a development that link Chadron's downtown to the old rail line's mile marker 400 -- the exact spot the abandoned line begins. The City of Chadron has been granted an easement alongside the active rail line, and the NNTA plans to provide maintenance on the section and provide funds for development. With your support, we can make it happen.
